Laurence Jacobs received a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, he joined the faculty of the Institute of Physics at the National University of Mexico. He has since held several teaching and research positions, including about fifteen years at MIT, where he was a member of the Center for Theoretical Physics. Prof. Jacobs has done research mainly in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, computational science and medicine, and has lectured and published widely in these and other fields. He has received several prestigious awards for his research, including a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

Predictive Medicine and Big Data. Abstract

The availability of real-time data on metabolic, cytokine, and autonomic metrics will revolutionize our understanding of rapidly changing health states, and will lead to the consequent possibility of real-time intervention to respond in a timely manner to life-threatening events. Getting there will require the development of new data-acquisition and transmission technologies and new modeling algorithms, or the adaptation of existing ones. I will briefly introduce these and related topics, and discuss my thoughts on how this revolution might develop and where it might take us in the coming years.
